Political Threats

November 17, 2025
The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) says its members are facing threats from political supporters who accuse the coalition of favouring a particular party and opposing the current administration.
At a press briefing in Lilongwe, HRDC chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa said some people claim the coalition supports the Malawi Congress Party.
"These people take it from the fact that HRDC never organised demonstrations during the Tonse Alliance government but we are not here to organise demonstrations for the sake of making noise, demonstrations come as a last resort after exhausting all engagement channels," he said.
Kaiyatsa dismissed claims that HRDC is planning demonstrations.
He said: "We are and we will continue monitoring governance issues and engage government appropriately but where all channels fail, we will mobilise demonstrations."
Kaiyatsa added that HRDC has introduced an initiative to help members and other defenders who receive threats— offering emergency security, legal aid and psychosocial support.
